Candela Capitán
Director
Candela Capitán (born in Seville in 1996, lives and works in Barcelona) is a choreographer, dancer and artist whose practice operates across dance, performance, installation and visual culture.
Working from a feminist perspective, she investigates the body as a political terrain where power, desire, discipline and resistance converge. Her projects explore the body's physical and psychological limits, questioning contemporary mechanisms of control, the technologies that shape subjectivity, and the ways in which wellness, productivity and care inform our experience of the world.
Moving across different modes of presenting her work, her projects take the form of choreographies, performances and installations conceived as dispositifs in which the body becomes a site of physical and political experimentation. Through these works, she brings bodies, objects, architectures and infrastructures into relation, creating situations where vulnerability, exhaustion, contemplation and pleasure become tools of resistance and transformation.
Oscillating between the ritualistic, the playful and the unsettling, her work proposes experiences of intense physical and emotional engagement, inviting audiences to become part of the tensions that unfold within each piece.
Her work has been presented across a range of formats and contexts, including museums, theatres, festivals and exhibition spaces.
In 2025, her works Content Cage and Flight Room were presented in the solo exhibition X at inter.pblc (Copenhagen), while their audiovisual versions were featured as finalists for the CIRCA Prize at Piccadilly Circus (London). SOLAS, her most ambitious stage work to date, has been presented at venues and festivals including L'Artesà (Barcelona), Festival Verão Azul (Faro), Festival de Marseille, and De Singel (Antwerp) in 2025; Teatro Central (Seville), La Mutant (Valencia), Dampfzentrale (Bern), Festival Cádiz en Danza – Teatro Falla (Cádiz), and Festival Manifesto – Espacio Niemeyer (Paris) in 2024; and Teatros del Canal (Madrid) in 2023.
Her performance Celda Sonora was presented in 2024 at Museu Tàpies (Barcelona) and La Casa Encendida (Madrid). The Death at The Club, in its various formats, has been presented at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya as part of Festival Grec (Barcelona) in 2024; at Spazio Maiocchi (in collaboration with Gucci, Milan) and Steinsland Berliner (Stockholm) in 2022; at Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) in 2021; at Festival Clubs – Arts a la pista (Barcelona) in 2020; and at University College London and Motor Dance (London) in 2019.
19762. Solos y conectados, a large-scale sculptural and performative installation, was presented at Tanzhaus NRW (Düsseldorf) and Teatro Central (Seville) in 2023, and at TanzKassel as part of documenta fifteen (Germany) in 2022.
Dispositivo de Saturación Sexual, the seminal work that later evolved into SOLAS, was presented at Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA), EINA (Barcelona), and SEXKINO ROLAND at ETH Zurich (Switzerland) in 2022, and on Chaturbate (online) in 2019.
Her first performative installation, Mantis, Three Hours of Coffin, was presented at Festival Loom (Barcelona) in 2018.
