Lena Dunham’s Girls live on stage!

In her moving graduation performance De Sont of Mjoezik, Maria Zandvliet restaged The Sound of Music. Now, she turns her attention to the equally iconic HBO series Girls by Lena Dunham (2012-2017). Together with three fellow performers, she takes the plunge. Or at least, they make an attempt. Re-enacting the lives of four twenty-somethings in New York City seems like a banal starting point. How hard can it be?

More than ever, the figure of the ‘young girl’ shakes us awake in a world where desire is insatiable. She is a capitalist wet dream: the ultimate object of seduction who also desires for herself. But what are the fantasies that keep her awake at night?

Revisiting the series Girls, a turbulent portrait of the era just before #MeToo, raises new questions. What does it mean to be a girl ten years later? How much longer will her success keep her afloat? Is her story worth telling, or is it better left as a passage in a diary? Through a play of love and catharsis, the performance seeks liberation from the suffocating scripts of the ‘young girl’. Good luck, girls!
