Do You Remember Revolution?

Master's thesis (KASK Drama) by Rinus Martha Chaerle
Thu 23 Apr and Fri 24 Apr

Some stories are too dangerous to repeat.

1830. An opera performance sets Brussels ablaze. The mesmerizing sounds of The Mute of Portici ignite a rebellion against the Dutch oppressor. The Belgian Revolution is a fact.

Almost two centuries later – in an equally explosive political climate – three fishermen from Portici reclaim their place on stage. Just as the opera conducts, they mutiny once again against the occupier. However, the chains of romance weigh heavily: can the fishermen escape the compelling beat of the music? And can the struggle against our collective amnesia be won?

Do You Remember Revolution? traces a Belgian history of revolutionary and counter-revolutionary violence. Starting from the mythical opera, the performance wanders through the leaden '80s and the armed resistance of the far left, arriving in a climate that criminalizes activism and antifascism. Do You Remember Revolution? questions the legitimacy of armed struggle. Where is the line between resistance and terror? Has revolution outlived its political significance? And if so, how do we want to remember it?

Spoken in Dutch, sung in French, subtitled in Dutch.
Technical triggers: this performance makes use of loud music and bright lights.
