A whole kettleful of biting and boiling theatricality

Nile Harris is a theatre maker and performer from Miami, currently based in New York. Despite his young career, he has already grown into a phenomenon there. In his sharp, humorous, and tumultuous performances, he takes an unvarnished aim at American culture. Vulture magazine aptly characterizes his work as: "a whole kettleful of biting, boiling, truly gonzo theatricality that’s equal parts deadly serious and gleefully self- (and everyone-)mocking."

Now, Harris comes to Europe for an extended period of time. At the invitation of CAMPO, he will spend a month working in our studios alongside his long-time dramaturg and visual designer, Dyer Rhoads. Together, they are exploring how their work resonates within the Ghent and European context. Harris’s work invariably arises from a confrontation with institutional frameworks and through encounters with artists from the local scene. As part of this residency, KASK drama students are invited to collaborate on Harris’s research.

At the end of the month, we are opening up the theatre for a work-in-progress showing. A first look at how this collaboration has unfolded. Now is your chance to discover their work front row in Ghent. Because these artists will define the contemporary theatre landscape for decades to come.

Nile Harris and Dyer Rhoads are long-term collaborators whose practices seamlessly intertwine. While Harris’s background lies in acting, clowning, and directing, Rhoads serves as his dramaturg and visual designer. The duo recently created an installation for the prestigious Whitney Biennial: Dark Brown Birkin Bag (2026), a provocative work accompanied by the poignant wall text: “artist’s skin, thread, and hardware.”
