The new entrance hall of CAMPO nieuwpoort by visual artist Elen Braga

When you enter through the gateway, it is as if you are being swallowed by the theatre. You see the arches of the grandstand, and the theatre hall is only a few meters away from that gate. It is a kind of portal, or a vestibule. In this foyer, I want to enhance the fictional world you are about to experience in the theatre hall. From the street, you don’t enter a dull gray space; you step into the body of the theatre! – Elen Braga

 

Starting this year, CAMPO annually invites an artist to transform the entrance hall of CAMPO nieuwpoort. How do you give shape to the transition from the daily hustle and bustle to the distinct temporal and spatial experience that theatre demands?

 

Visual artist Elen Braga, known for her textile artworks, is the first to take on the challenge. She views the entrance gate as the gateway to the inside of a body. Swallowed through the mouth, you slide into another, hidden world.

 

For the creation of My Body Inside Out, Braga collaborated with numerous people. Some have been visiting CAMPO for a long time, while others are just getting to know the arts center. Together, they stitched the installation: a collective imagination of the body.

 

Braga asked the participants about their fears and dreams, which they translated into movement, imagery, and words. The artist turned this journey of exploration into a new video work, also on display here.

 

Braga sees the wrapping of CAMPO’s walls as a reinterpretation of what she calls the ‘institutional body’. That new body is not clean, slick, or unambiguous. It is a body that is alive, messy, full of dirt and cracks. From this material body, the video work takes you on a journey to the mind: to the individual behind the participants.

 

This is a body in constant motion, populated by peculiar figures who find a home in the theatre: the dancer, the actor, the musician, the performer, as well as the quirky community that considers the existence of art essential: the audience and the staff.

Elen Braga is a trajectory artist at CAMPO. Braga is a multidisciplinary visual artist working across installation, sculpture, performance, and interventions in public space. She explores themes such as power and resilience, delving into mythological narratives to examine how they persist in contemporary behavior and beliefs. Braga is represented by Wouters Gallery (Brussels, BE) and Galleria Reus (Mallorca, ES). At CAMPO this season, she is also designing the set for PETRUSHKA GAME OVER, a dance solo by artistic director Michiel Vandevelde.
