A fiery celebration of freedom and activism

In 1978, the Ghent-based group Rooie Vlinder, a radical queer organization, organized Belgium's very first Pride in Ghent. It was both a celebration and a protest. Over the following five years, the Rooie Vlinder spread its wings to Antwerp and Brussels. The organization fought for equal rights and became a vital force within the LGBTQIA+ community of its time.

Today, 46 years later, there is no Pride in Ghent. Have we already achieved all our rights? Why has the city where it all began fallen silent?

Inspired by the legacy of the Rooie Vlinder, a diverse group of queer artists reimagine this past through a contemporary lens.

In this way, they are attempting to respond to the desire for a festive, activist ritual centred on connection, community and the search for identity and freedom, in a world full of uncertainty and oppression.

Jarne Van Loon and Freek De Craecker are both theater makers and actors that inhabit worlds where extravagance, wildness and queerness are sovereign. Their collaboration traces back to a wide array of projects: Freek played in Nachtzwemmen, a party performance created by Jarne Van Loon and Lieselot Siddiki. They both performed in After All Springville by Miet Warlop. And they collaborated for Nightshift in Oostende as well as for a party performance in De Studio during the Fade Into You festival.
